Ben Linder’s death changed the way the world viewed America’s policies Central America

In northern Nicaragua’s cloud forests, amongst the rutted mud roads and coffee-growing fincas, are signs of the work Ben Linder started more than 30 years ago. These small hydroelectric projects have brought electricity to thousands of people. Linder was an engineer drawn to helping Nicaraguan peasants in rural areas after the Sandinistas overthrew dictator Anastasio Somoza Debayle. Linder’s death meant the world started paying attention to the brutal tactics of the Contra militias that the CIA had trained and armed.
