New Study Shows Muscle Endurance Benefits of Mitopure
Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, trial found Mitopure™ Urolithin A has a positive impact on muscle endurance in older adults.
New Clinical Study Shows Mitopure (Urolithin A) Significantly Improves Muscle Endurance in Older Adults published in JAMA Network Open
The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, trial found Mitopure™ Urolithin A has a positive impact on muscle endurance in older adults.
Results show Mitopure improved endurance of two muscles in the hand and leg compared to the placebo group after only two months.
Amazentis, an innovative Swiss life sciences company pioneering scientific breakthroughs in cellular health and nutrition, announced today that the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Network Open published the results of the first clinical study to explore the muscle endurance benefits of the postbiotic Urolithin A. The study found that daily intake of Amazentis’ proprietary Urolithin A, Mitopure, significantly improved muscle endurance at two months with a daily dose of 1000 mg. These findings validate that Mitopure is safe and beneficial for muscle endurance and mitochondrial health in healthy older adults. Mitopure works by supporting the cells’ ability to renew their powerplants, the mitochondria, during the aging process. As muscles have a high demand for energy there are a large number of mitochondria in muscle cells.
Energize Trial Findings
This double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in adults 65 to 90 years old (n=66) was conducted at the University of Washington School of Medicine with the professor of radiology David Marcinek as principal investigator. Participants were randomized to receive daily supplementation with 1000 mg Mitopure or placebo for 4 months. Muscle fatigue tests and plasma biomarkers were assessed at baseline, 2 months, and 4 months. Six-minute walk distance and maximal ATP production were also assessed at baseline and 4 months.
Change in Muscle Endurance in Hands and Legs
- Two measures of skeletal muscle endurance were improved in the supplemented group compared to the placebo group. Endurance was measured with isometric exercises involving the hand (first dorsal interosseous, between thumb and forefinger) and leg (tibialis anterior, alongside the shinbone.) After two months the number of muscle contractions until fatigue increased from baseline by ~17% (p=0.05 compared to placebo) for the leg muscle and 26% (p<0.01 compared to placebo) for the hand muscle for the group receiving Mitopure compared to 2% and 3% increase for placebo. Improvements vs baseline continued to be clinically meaningful at 4 months of intervention, but investigators found no statistical difference between the supplemented group and placebo at this time point.
- Measures of whole-body physical performance such as the distance covered during a six-minute walk also improved by ~15% vs baseline in the supplemented group as compared to ~10% in placebo- after four months. However, researchers saw no statistically significant effect of the supplement compared with the placebo.
- Plasma levels of biomarkers linked to mitochondrial health were significantly improved (specific acylcarnitines and ceramides) and an important biomarker of inflammation (C-reactive protein) was decreased significantly vs placebo.
These results are exciting because this is the first demonstration that Mitopure improves muscle function in humans. Furthermore, this improvement in fatigue resistance occurred in the absence of any changes to participants' exercise routineAnurag Singh, Chief Medical Officer Amazentis
Aging is associated with a decline in mitochondrial function which can lead to reduced exercise capacity and muscle endurance. Urolithin A is the first and only compound that has been clinically shown to improve muscle endurance by renewing the mitochondria through a potent biological quality control mechanism called mitophagy. By activating this important biological pathway, Mitopure promotes healthy aging and improved muscle health and performance.
Even with adequate consumption of the right diet, most people lack the gut microbiome to produce enough of this potent postbiotic to have a therapeutic effect. A recently published trial demonstrated that a single 500mg dose of Mitopure delivered six times more Urolithin A than a glass of pomegranate juice*. This underscores the importance of supplementing with a clinically tested calibrated dose of Mitopure.
This is an important discovery in longevity and muscle health research as the results from the study showed that after just two months and with no change to their exercise routine, participants who received Mitopure daily experienced significant improvement in hand and leg muscle endurance compared to placebo. Mitopure was also found to be safe and well-tolerated with no serious adverse events reported, confirming positive safety results from previous trials and the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) review.
“This study further validates the role of mitochondrial health as an important pillar of vitality and shows Mitopure is a first in class nutrient that meaningfully impacts muscle health. We are proud to offer this proprietary form of Urolithin A in our timeline brand and inside Nestlé Health Science products,” said Chris Rinsch, CEO and Co-Founder of Amazentis. “We remain committed to pioneering clinically validated products that optimize cellular health with the mission of keeping millions of people healthier for longer”.
In addition, Amazentis also announced that Dr. Eric Verdin has joined the Amazentis scientific advisory board. Dr. Verdin is the president and chief executive officer of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and he has dedicated his career to studying longevity with the goal of transforming everyone into healthy centenarians.
